Books for reflecting on time, life and purpose

These are books I have enjoyed and recommend to clients wanting to explore time, life and purpose.

πŸ“š How to live, love, learn and connect…

Passionate, perceptive and much-treasured meditations on the natural world and what connects all living things. Mary Oliver’s collection of poems in Devotions.

πŸ“šHow to spend time…

Draws on the insights of philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers. Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks is a great place for exploring your relationship with time.

πŸ“š How to live a life and find purpose…

Nod to Socrates (the unexamined life is not worth living). Psychoanalyst Stephen Grosz draws on his experiences in creating thought-provoking tales of everyday human experience and exploring purpose in life.

 πŸ“š How to get unstuck…

Using emotional agility to quieten a judgemental inner voice – Emotional Agility by Susan David. This is a relatable and practical book (more behavioural than existential). Psychological tools for addressing an inner negative chatterbox and move towards thriving in life and work.

πŸ“š How death teaches us about life…

One of the most beautiful books I have read in recent years: A Matter of Death and Life by Irvin and Marilyn Yalom. An existential exploration. What it means to have a good death, and what it means to live with loss. This is a book that is centred around grief and loss, but explores purpose, intimacy, love, and grief.

 πŸ“š Challenging your perspective…

101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think by Brianna Wiest does what the title says it will!

 πŸ“š Making sense of suffering

Viktor Frankl’s classic Man’s Search for Meaning is a challenging and very thought-provoking book. Explores how we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it and move forward with renewed purpose.

πŸ“š How to love...

Conversations on Love is a collection of essays by a range of writers exploring how relationships work and evolve over a lifetime.
